'Cheerleading was too masculine for women': How today's bare midriffs and pom-pom waving was once a male sport

Cheerleaders, with their micro-minis, tight mid-riff baring sweaters and iconic pom-poms, have been impressing male fans and rousing excitement among eager sports spectators in America for decades.
But the half time show of a professional football game that these days centres around a group of scantily clad women writhing and waving their toned arm in the air to the beats of the latest number one hit, was once a strictly male-only arena.
In fact in the late Thirties, the job was deemed too 'masculine' for women whose appropriation of slang and loud shouting was seen as unfeminine.
It's a man's world: In 1924 cheerleading was a male-dominated job as exemplified by these Columbia University students, and was seen as 'valiant' and unsuitable for women

Come on fellas! It wasn't until World War I that women were afforded the opportunity to fill the shoes of the absent cheerleaders who had gone to battle

The concept of cheering a team evolved in the 1880's, according to The Society Pages, when it took form as a morale boosting set of stunts, gymnastics and rallying cries led by men.
Cheering was a 'valiant' sport, one that required strength, leadership and athletic wherewithal; qualities that were not seen as pertaining to women.

Being a cheerleader in those days was an honour almost as coveted in high school or college as that of being on the team itself and certainly as respected.
As publication Nation noted in 1911: 'The reputation of having been a valiant "cheer-leader" is one of the most valuable things a boy can take away from college. As a title to promotion in professional or public life, it ranks hardly second to that of having been a quarterback.'

Too masculine? Being a cheerleader for men in the Twenties and Thirties was as respected as being the quarterback himself and a role that many past American presidents played
Some of America's most famous leaders, in fact, owe their political achievements to time spent noisily stirring up excitement on the sidelines of their college sporting events.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan were all cheerleaders as well as actor Jimmy Stewart and Republican leader Tom DeLay.
It wasn't until World War I forced the men to the battlefields that women were given the opportunity to step into their cheerleading shoes. And they had to fight for the right to keep them on until long after the Second World War.
In 1938, one opponent argued: '[Women cheerleaders] frequently became too masculine for their own good… we find the development of loud, raucous voices… and the consequent development of slang and profanity by their necessary association with [male] squad members…'
Unfeminine? These days, professional level cheerleading teams are dominated by scantily clad women dancing to the latest chart-topping hits

But by the 1950's women were dominating the half time shows and sideline antics, their pom-poms and broad smiles replacing the gritty stunts and injuries of the past.
'Cheerleading in the sixties consisted of cutesy chants, big smiles and revealing uniforms,' reported Society Pages. 'There were no gymnastic tumbling runs.  No complicated stunting.  Never any injuries.  About the most athletic thing sixties cheerleaders did was a cartwheel followed by the splits.'
These days, although cheerleading on the professional level continues to evolve, from the 'stomp n shake' squads to complex dance routines, teams are mostly made up of slender, able-bodied women who attract the attention of male fans.
In high school where gymnastics prevail in a more competitive environment and where tournaments are held between squads, boys are often needed to help throw their female counterparts into the air and support the pyramid formations and teams are therefore often co-ed.

That's better! Sarah Harding looks toned and lean after another gym session

If you've ever needed motivation to kickstart the pre-summer diet, let this be it.
Sarah Harding showcased an enviably flat midriff while strolling along Primrose Hill today.
The Girls Aloud star slipped into a cute grey vest top, that hovered just above her navel.

The 30-year-old singer barely had an inch to pinch as she also appears to have been working out with weights in the gym as well as just shedding pounds on cardio exercises like the running machine.

Upon Sarah's T-shirt was a tribute to US hip-hoppers Run DMC, with a picture of the group and the slogan 'It's Like That', taken from the their 1983 dancefloor track of the same name.
Despite the sporty look, which Sarah teamed with black leggings and a pair of trainers, she opted for a full face of make-up and her blonde hair slicked back into a ponytail.

Embracing the spring weather in a pair of large aviators, Sarah is perhaps shunning carbs before a possible bikini getaway as she bit into an apple, clutching a bottle of water and pineapple slices.
While obviously on the slender side, she is looking healthy and does not need to lose more weight.
However, after Kimberley Walsh revealed there will be a reunion tour in 2013, perhaps she is hoping to get a head start with her endurance for the two hour arena shows each night.

Walsh, who is currently starring in Shrek: The Musical, said the girls will join forces again for their tenth year anniversary.
She said: 'I know everyone’s been speculating about what we will do. It will be arena dates at the start of next year and we will have new music to go with it.'
Yesterday, Sarah was seen running errands in a skull T-shirt, taking advantage of her daily chores by doubling up Waitrose carrier bags as weights.

Can't help but show that skin! Vanessa Hudgens flashes her stomach once again on the set of Spring Breakers

She plays a gun-wielding, alcohol swigging teenager in her upcoming movie Spring Breakers.
And of course her new bad girl role includes flashing a large amount of flesh.
And Vanessa Hudgens was once again flaunting her figure last nightas she filmed more action on the set of the motion picture about four university students who land themselves in jail before being bailed out by a drug dealer, played by James Franco.

The brunette, who dons a blonde wig for the flick, flashed her stomach as she adjusted her sound gear in between scenes.
The former Disney star had slipped into some tiny red shorts and a grey hooded sweater to film here scenes.
The actress had also turned into a robber for the night shoot on the St. Petersburg, Florida set.
Luckily, she and her two onscreen friends were only robbing a restaurant for one of their scenes.

All three girls wore gigantic blue sweatshirts, tiny athletic shorts and pink masks.
Hudgens wielded a hammer as her weapon as she pretended to hold up restaurant patrons.
Her co-star Ashley Benson was in charge of threatening with a gun, while Rachel Korine drove the getaway car, a yellow pickup truck.

Though the ladies looked up for their nefarious task, they all appeared to have had a better time filming recent scenes drinking beer in a hot tub.
The girls play college co-eds who decide to fund an amazing spring break by committing a robbery.
They are, of course, caught by the police but saved just in the nick of time by a crazy arms dealer played by James Franco who then recruits them to do his evil bidding.

She added: 'It's all done in the craziest manic way. There's a bit of craziness inside of me as well, so I'm excited to let loose.'
The film also co-stars Selena Gomez as the girls' fourth best friend.

Another design to cross off the list! Rihanna shows off her latest tattoo design in true rude girl fashion

Rihanna is already the proud bearer of 15 tattoos but now the pop star has added a new design to her collection.
The 24-year-old showed off a controversial creation that is likely to split opinion in terms of taste.
The Rude Boy singer has a new eye-catching cross tattoo which she had done last night on the Lower East Side, in New York City.

Rihanna went to her good friend and long time tattoo designer Bang Bang for the art work, which coincided with the legendary tattooist opening his new store.

The pictures show the singer posing with a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses and wearing a bandana while she displays some of her other symbols.
Describing the experience, Bang Bang said: 'We did a very fine small cross directly on her collarbone.
'She said her cross meant a lot to her and she totally loved it!'
The fresh tattoo is still raw and appeared to be coloured red as it sits just below the star's neckline.
This is the 16th design Rihanna has added to her body but it is only the second tattoo that represents any religious links.
In 2007 she had what was believed to be her third tattoo, to her lower back and side.
Rihanna wanted to have a Sanskrit prayer going down her right hip that would say 'Forgiveness, Honesty, Suppression and Control', but unfortunately it was misspelled.
The Bajan-born singer recently revealed that despite all of her artistic etchings, she isn't happy with her current body shape.
She told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show on Kiis FM: 'The Five Factor Diet has gone straight out the window ever since I went on tour. I mean, It's difficult to have any kind of routine when your schedule is that crazy.

'So I really have no idea how I'm continuously losing weight,' Rihanna admitted, acknowledging her thin frame.
'It's actually pretty annoying, because now I don't have a butt, and I have no boobs. I already had no boobs to start with. So annoying! and I'm eating everything!'
